Best Sunglasses for Kilimanjaro (Prevent Eye Damage)
The equatorial sun is very strong. While you should make it a habit to protect your eyes against the sun all the time, on Kilimanjaro it’s extra important that you have the right eyewear. In this video, we discuss what to look for when choosing your sunglasses, the common types of sunglasses, and let you know which are suitable and which are definitely not.
The most important feature for your sunglasses is that they provide 100% protection from UV rays. Ultraviolet, or UV, is high-energy light that’s beyond the spectrum visible to humans. UV radiation is harmful to the eyes. Overexposure to this light is thought to be a cause of cataracts, retinal damage and other eye problems.
UV exposure at high altitude is substantially greater than at sea level because there is less atmosphere to filter out ultraviolet light. It is estimated that with every 1,000 meters in altitude, UV levels increase by about 10%. So, on the summit of Kilimanjaro, there is approximately 60% more UV radiation than at sea level. On top of that, in snowy environments, up to 90% of the radiation can be reflected off the ground. In these circumstances, the intensity of UV radiation is effectively two times greater than at sea level. This is why you need to take your eye protection seriously.
When choosing your sunglasses, make sure they provide 100% protection from UV rays. Look for products that specifically state this, or are labeled as UV400.

Has anyone ever tried to climb a mountain with an astronaut suit?
For fun? Presumably, it would be hard to move and it'd be really hot.
@@Ultimate-Kilimanjaro Yes but a suit made for mount Everest... Maybe they can make it flexible, light weight, and durable too
Thanks for the information sir
You're welcome
I have a question that may sound stupid but, if you choose a down jacket on your regular size (let's say M), are they made a little bit larger in order to accomodate other base and mid layers of the same size? Or if, for example, I dress everyting size M, I need to buy a L sized Down Jacket? Thanks
Down jackets are not oversized. Generally, you'd buy the same size as you normally wear, just try it on with a few layers and see if it fits.
Hi, Should I start taking Viagra when AMS symptoms begin, or take it from day one of the climb as a preventive. Thank you
It can be used either way, but the recommendation is to take it as a preventative.
Looking forward to the Aug 31 Lemosho with y'all
Thanks so much Kevin.. I'm booked for the Sept 28th 8day Lemosho climb.. Training and so excited!!

Think I had only two doses and it made me unable to urinate. Quite a problem until it wore off.
Thank you for this!
Excellent vid, 100% agree to everything you said based on your experience. At some point at some summit push you will ask yourself; what am I doing here, why did I spend my precious money doing this.

So, if i have to train on a treadmill, i should aim to be walking at a good incline at about 2-3mph?
Frankly, walking on a treadmill alone is probably not enough, even at an incline. It simply doesn't work you hard enough. A stair machine is much better.
can you do a chimera between an elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard in real life and what will it look like?
OK Kevin..now I'm totally confused.. I have been watching all the videos and reading blog after blog on how tough (especially summit night) the climb is...and now you come out with a video on climbing Kilimanjaro is easy.. LOLOL I am right on the fence..as this for me would be pretty extreme for me.. now I'm baffled.. LOL I really appreciate all your info however!! Thanks much. WiL
I climbed in 2018, it is very tiring for sure (especially for someone above their 40s). No matter how good of a guide you get, you are still using your own legs to walk for 5-8 hours per day (for a 8-9 day trip) and you don't get the luxury of a soft bed. The risk, from what I have heard while before and while climbing, is that success rates for fewer days (4-6) is significantly lower because climbers don't get acclimatized to the high elevation fast enough (plus it's more intense). Do it now before you get any older!
@@HercadosP OK.. took the plunge.. Signed up for the 8 day Lemosho Route Sept 28th.. Excited!

Perhaps not...
Reached summit,2wks.ago..age 76,so you too can do it! Pole, pole
damn you have a bad track record 3 fails on one mountain. LOL
Two fails, then success! But the Cascades are known for its bad weather. 50% of the commercial climbs on Mount Rainier's are aborted due to weather/avalanche risk.
Thanks for stopping me from wasting $50 on something which would have been deleterious!
I don't understand why you'd wear your down jacket over your outer shell? down jackets are water resistant but not waterproof. Outer shells are waterproof and windproof.
Why would you rate 3 for cost if it is very expensive... surely more cost is bad...
For some categories, a high score meant a favorable condition (scenery, acclimatization) while others it meant a unfavorable condition (difficulty, crowds, cost). We used the stars to indicate low (one star), medium (two stars) or high (three stars) regardless of which type of category it fell in, for consistency. For instance, difficulty got three stars for it being a hard trail. Likewise for cost, it got three stars for a high cost.
